Summer Journal

Well, I didn't do a very good job of keeping up with my notebook journal this summer, so about a week ago, I decided that I would just write a big journal entry about the whole entire summer and use Blogger so that I could upload photos too.

So the last day of school and PIR was May 25th. Mark came down for Memorial weekend and we spent some time at Mom and Dad's house in Great Falls. Megan and I took the kids up to the cabin that weekend and hiked the trail to the cliff. We came home on the 27th, and I played for the Memorial Day services on May 28th. I started thinking about the fence project and turned in the paperwork to the office, but also got called to be a lifeguard for the summer and took my certification classes in Cutbank over the first weekend in June. I spent each day working on the band library project, but didn't get it finished until the end of the summer because of everything else going on.

We took a trip up to our favorite campground on June 4th and hiked trail 108 for about half a mile after having a picnic lunch. Ashlynn's birthday party was on the 7th, and then we got on the plane for Missouri on the 8th. We stayed at Megan's family's cabin on Tablerock Lake until the 17th and had lots of fishing and swimming and relaxing on the deck. I spent a lot of time with the kids, but I also started reflecting on teaching and reading through music textbooks. Megan's grandma came to visit for a few days and Phil's family came for the last few days, too.

We flew back to Montana on the 17th and I immediately left for Hamp's Camp in Moscow, Idaho while Megan watched the kids for a week back in Dutton. I really, really liked the camp. Everything was beneficial: I got to play the clarinet for a week, take private lessons with all of the professors, study books in the library, and talk with other teachers about teaching. I learned a lot of things that I plan to use this year, especially things related to behavior and culture. I even got to lead a presentation on music advocacy. I drove home on Saturday the 23rd and got home around midnight.

On Sunday, we went up to Swift Dam for the Gustafson family reunion and stayed for most of the day. I worked for a couple of days at the pool and worked on a paper for the professional development course. I wound up taking it with me to Denver and finishing it just before the deadline.

On July 1st, we left for Denver Children's Hospital and stayed in a hotel for a week. We took Andrew to meet Dr. Soden and the rest of the team at Denver, plus do some imaging and get a plan going for progressing to toddler formula. It was a long time to stay in a hotel room! We went to a pool park on the 4th of July, but Megan ate some bad food and got food poisoning. We made it home on the 6th and I was able to start working on the fence project finally.

We celebrated a late 4th of July at the cabin that weekend with Mark and Evan visiting. Hiked up to Memorial Falls and then went home to work on the fence. Dad and I went on a kayaking trip on the 10th of July. It was really beautiful, but my camera got soaked and was ruined, unfortunately. I helped with the Dutton Fun Day parade on the 14th and also sange the National Anthem at the Voyagers game in Great Falls that evening. I worked really hard on the fence until the 21st and got all of the fence posts set in concrete.

I got called to be a counselor at the Beartooth Mountain Christian Ranch camp and spend the week of July 23rd there. It was nice to be a mentor and a role model and to be able to spend some time away from computers and everything else. Megan came up on the last day and we celebrated our anniversary by going camping at Mystic Lake. I was afraid of getting eaten by bears, so we only stayed one night and then at the cabin on the 28th. I worked all week on the fence and finally got it finished on the 7th of August. Here's a journal entry on building the fence.

Evan came on the 4th of August and we raced the Harvest Triathlon together. He beat me by about 5 minutes overall, but I beat him in the swim. I worked at the pool most days and started working on classroom projects once the fence was finished. I finally finished the band library project on the 17th of August, and now I've got one weekend before school starts! This summer was way too busy and hopefully next summer I don't try to take on as many projects and vacations so I can spend more time enjoying nature and enjoying my family.
