What does God want me to do?

I tried to answer a question that I had asked myself this morning: What am I good at? The reason why I asked it is because I felt like maybe I wasn't in the right line of work. I felt like I just didn't have the passion for it like I used to. In fact, I feel like I lost the passion shortly after I started working six years ago. So I asked myself, what else am I good at?

I figure that God gives us all talents, or at least the desire to be good at something, and whatever that is, that's what He wants us to do in life. Seeing as how my passion for teaching music feels diminished, I tried to think about other things that I might be good at or have a passion for. But no matter what else came to mind, my ability to play and understand music seemed to be my best attribute, followed by my desire to educate.

Now there may be other ways to express my abilities, but at least I am sure of what they are, and that gives me some hope that I am following God's plan for my life. I still hope that God has a bigger purpose for me, that I will be more than just a music teacher at a small school for the rest of my life. I pray that God would point me in the right direction and reveal some small part of my future so that I know what to focus on.

Paid to lead worship?

This is a private post, so if your name isn't Luke Juras then please don't read on. I don't put in a ton of time leading worship each week. On a regular week, when I'm playing all by myself, I go on Sunday from 4:45 to 6:00, so just over an hour. I also spend at the very least half an hour picking music and getting it ready for worship. That means choosing 3-4 songs and what order to sing them in, maybe picking which verses to do for longer hymns, and then creating a document with all of the lyrics on one page for performance. I used to print copies for the congregation too, but now I communicate the songs with the pastor and tech guy, and it gets put up on the screen. That's bare minimum. Some weeks it is more difficult to pick songs and it takes me an hour just to get the right ones in the right order. Sometimes I have a request and/or decide to learn a new song. The Fence Project: A Reflection

Wow, where do I start? The fence project is the biggest project that I have taken on in my recent memory. Unfortunately, it also highlighted my weakness of severely under-estimating the amount of time that it takes to get these kinds of things done, like thinking I could put up all the rails in one day instead of the actual week that it took. But before jumping into all of the details, maybe I should start at the beginning. The fence project was an idea that started before Andrew was born. Ashlynn was getting old enough to walk around and explore, and she got her first few spankings from walking out into the road instead of staying in the yard. goal setting

I was researching "time management" strategies and came across a wonderful website  where I was reminded to set goals first. You can't manage your time wisely if you don't have goals. It also reminded me to prioritize - but defined prioritizing much different than anything I've ever heard before. Prioritizing doesn't mean deciding what to do first or what's most important: it means that you decide which things are NOT important and should be crossed off the list. Now I'm guessing that it was written with work-related to-do lists in mind, but it really struck me as what things I should "cross off" in my everyday life habits. So I made a list of my current life goals and then a list of things that don't contribute whatsoever to those goals that I should stop doing.
